How to Know When It’s Time to Say Goodbye to Your Pet
Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the most difficult decisions a family will ever face. Pets are more than animals — they are companions, confidants, and family members. As veterinarians, we often hear the question, “How do I know when it’s time?” The truth is, there’s no single answer. But there are signs, tools, and support systems to help you make this decision with clarity, love, and peace.
Understanding Quality of Life
At the heart of this decision is your pet’s quality of life. While aging and illness are natural, we look for signs that your pet’s daily life is no longer joyful or comfortable. Some important questions to ask include:
Is my pet able to eat and drink normally?
Can they move around without excessive pain or confusion?
Do they still enjoy activities, affection, or interaction?
Are they experiencing more bad days than good ones?
Is pain being managed effectively?
If the answer to many of these is “no,” it may be time to consider if their suffering outweighs their moments of comfort. For more specifics on how to assess Quality of Life, see our post here.
Common Physical and Emotional Signs
Pets may not be able to tell us with words, but they often show us with their behavior. Signs that it might be time include:
Loss of appetite or interest in food/water
Chronic pain despite medication
Incontinence or difficulty using the bathroom
Withdrawal from family members or increased anxiety
Pacing, confusion, or getting “stuck” in corners
Unresponsive to previously enjoyed activities
Each pet is unique, and changes can be subtle or sudden. That’s why it’s important to track these shifts over time.
The Quality-of-Life Scale
One tool we often recommend is a Quality-of-Life Scale, such as the HHHHHMM Scale (Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility, More Good Days Than Bad). Scoring each category from 0–10 can provide a clearer picture of your pet’s condition and help guide the decision.
You can download a simple version of the scale [here] (link to your form or resource if you have one).
Trusting Your Intuition — and Getting Support
You know your pet best. Often, our clients tell us they “just knew.” Maybe it was a look, a feeling, or a final shift in energy. If you’re feeling torn, please know you’re not alone. It’s okay to ask for help and take your time. We encourage open conversations between family members and your veterinary team.
